DARE TO BE DIFFERENT!
DARE TO BE DIFFERENT!
This is probably the single most difficult time of the year to uphold this resolution. As we enter into what has come to be known as the “Holiday Season” when, the name of Messiah, love and charity, people lie to their children (and get very angry of you don't go along with the Santa deceit), and people “traditionally ” over-eat, over-drink, over-spend, and over-party.
Few people would disagree that there is nothing Religious about the majority of Xmas “traditions” (eg Santa, elves, mistletoe, reindeer, decorated trees, etc.) and many people are aware of the fact that Messiah was not born in December. (The inns were full in Bethlehem because it was tax time at the end of the harvest season, probably no later than October.
Only the most confirmed Xmas “Junkie” would fail to recognize the many ways in which Xmas is commercialized and some people may also be familiar with Scripture such as Jer 10:2-4 which admonishes us not to decorate trees.
“...Learn not the way of the heathen...For the custom of the people are vain; for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the ax. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and hammers that it move not.”
And yet by Thanksgiving the majority of “good” Religious people are gearing up to celebrate this “Righteous Day”--buying cards and wraping paper, planning meals and decorations, contemplating gifts, etc. There is something to appeal to everyone about the day. The gourmet, the decorator, the doting Grandma, the shopper, the faithful. Everyone can get involved. It is infections and and addicting. Everywhere you go you hear Xmas songs, you see beautiful lights and decorations (millions of dollars) spent on items without a function, worthless things referred to in the Scripture as “vanity”, every family has their own additional traditions, everywhere the sights, sounds, and smells of Xmas entice you to participate.
But let us judge this day as the Scriptures instruct us to, by it's fruits, For “A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.” (Mt 7:18).
Listen to what adults say to children, and what children say to each other, wherever you do during and after the “Holidays.” Concersations revolved around “What do you want for Xmas.” “What did you ask Santa for” and then “What did you get” or “What did Santa bring you?” These have become ritualistic “Holiday” salutations encountered at schools, with relatives, at the grocery store, wherever and whenever you have any kind of social interaction.
These greetings alone, make it abundantly clear that Xmas is a merchant's holiday. It is they, and only they, who ultimately profit. Contrary to popular opinion, obviating a convenient rationalization,
most charitable contribution actually decrease during this time of year. Ask your Pastor, or any Pastor, if the average income of the Assembly goes up or down during the “holidays”. A full 50%, or greater of the total yearly sales volume of most department and toy stores is accounted for by “holiday” shopping. While the merchants are “selling” Xmas and earning tidy profits on their avertising investiment5s, divorces and suicide rates skyrocket, illness of all types abount (most likely related to sugar-coated, fat-laden, alcohol-laced “holiday” eating habits) and, in the spirit of “giving” or just because they get caught up in the merchant created buying frenzy, the average family goes into debt to support this once a year “habit.”
Why do most Religious people continue to participate in such a worldly custom, a pagan holiday masquerading as a Religious observance? (A wolf in sheep's clothing? A stumbling block to so many of their brethren?)
Many people, adults and children alike, are personally “hooked” on Xmas. We like receiving gifts, eating junk and the opportunity to “give in” to temptations without Assembly, parental or spousal admonition. (Another holiday tradition). Many others feel awkward telling family and friends that they are not going to participate in the single most universally popular celebration. And some people just don't know how to quit!!
To ease our guilt, many Religious people are making sincere attempts to “put Messiah back into Xmas.” Unfortunately, Mess was originally “put into Xmas in order to make a pagan holiday more palatable to Religious people.
Even if this was not the case, however, the 7th Commandment, “Thou shalt not commit adultery” expressly forbids the “mixing” of worldly and spiritual things. According to Webster 1998 Dictionary, something which is adulterated is “corrupted, debased by a mixture with something of less value.” We are commanded, when we become Religious people, to put off “...the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after Yahvah is created in righteousness and true holiness.” (Eph 4:22-24). Mixing the two, the way of the world and Yahvah's way, is adultery.
Webster defines an adulterer as “an apostate from the true faith, or one who violates his covenant engagements; a very wicked person.” Part of our covenant with Yahvah is his commandment to us to “come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Sovereign.” (2 Co 6:17)
We are warned not to be a part of this wicked world unless we do not love our Father in Heaven.
“Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with Yahvah? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of Yahvah.” (James 4:4)
“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eye, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. (1 Jn 2:15-16).
We are repeatedly admonished not to mix the new (Religious way) with the old (worldly way).
“And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old. And no man putteth new wine will burst the bottles, and he spilled, and the bottles shall perish. But new wine must be put into new bottles, and both are preserved,. No man also having drunk old wind straightway desireth new; for he saith, The old is better.” (Lk 5:36-39).
Creches (nativity scenes) under or instead of Xmas trees, “Happy B-day Messiah” signs or cakes, religious cards, even changing the day you celebrate only “adulterates” the holiday. Ultimately you must decide “whom ye will serve.” (Josh 24:15). Just like any bad habit, cutting back, smoking less, etc. doesn't end the addiction; YOU MUST QUIT, COMPLETELY!
Hansel and Gretel were enticed by the confectionery cottage in the woods but once they ate of it, they became captives of the old lady who lived there, just as we are held captive by our own desires to partake of the worldly offering of the “Holiday Season.” They were finally able to overpower their blind captor, something they could probably have done at anytime, and escape. We, too, can overpower our foe, temptation, and escape of the “Holidays” with all its trappings.
We must “STAND UP, STAND TALL” for Yahvah's days, regardless of what the rest of the “crowd” is doing. Yahvah commanded us to observe the Sabbath and messiah made the Last Supper an everlasting memorial to him to be “celebrated” by all of his followers. Yahvah never even suggested that we celebrate Messiah's birth and nowhere in the Scripture is there any evidence that the Apostle or anyone celebrated this day.
If you have already begun your holiday preparations for this year, please keep your eyes and ears open, be observant, be aware of how people greet one another, be aware of how much money gets spent, pay attention to how many people have colds and the flue. Tune in to how many different techniques merchants use to put you in the spending mood (easy credit, traditional music, ads, “free” gifts, refreshments, entertainments, babysitting services, longer hours, etc). Try to take a truly objective look at the “Holiday” this year and maybe next “Holiday” season you will decide to do as a friend does—close up shop and take a vacation!

@AOK4WAY - It is really nice to see you around again Bro. Tony. You are not around much like you use too be. Your comments were great. I am afraid lots of people will not read because it goes against what they believe and want to do this time of year. Thank you for stopping by and Shalom and have a blessed rest of the week. Bro. Doc
So very well written brother, and yet how many will have ears to hear? May Father open the eyes and ears of all who read this, draw them to Himself through Ye'shua the Messiah, and call His people out of this worldly excuse for consumerism, gluttony, and dissipation.,
This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. (Mat 15:8-9)
...Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. (Mat 15:6)
Ye'shua's peace be with you, your house and congregation, my brother. Shalom.
@ANVRSADDAY - Thank you for the wonderful reply. I am not trying to change anyone. But to make you think.
The Doctrine I teach comes straight from the Scriptures. I have let the Holy Ghost, teach me what I am suppose to know.
Did you know that it wasn't until the middle 1800's that anyone in America was allowed to celebrate Dec 25th?
Now, the Messianic Jewish Rabbi's will tell you that it was about Oct 5th when the Saviour came to earth as a baby.
I didn't know this until I have gone through a deep study of the priesthood and take all the discourses to come up with the date for His birth, and then I did it by the Baptism of the Messiah at 30 years and from the Spring and went backwards and came up with the same date, and the time of Mary become P.G. with the Saviour and moving forward and coming up with the same thing.
So when I learned all this I came to the understanding tradition was wrong, Scripture right, 25th Dec gone.
Thank you also for the nice comments on the Study.
My object Bro. Frank, is to make people think, and study for themselves whether or not this is right or wrong.
Everyone needs to prove it from the pages of the KJV or 1559 Geneva Scriptures whether it is right or wrong. I am not the final say so. He is. Yes, I did have a blessed Thanksgiving.
After the morning Service, we had dinner of the grounds in the mobile home with 50 people, crowded is the word.
Once you know me Bro. Frank, my object with things I post is to get one to think and study the subject for themselves.
And I have really been studying the Scriptures since 1973. So you have me beat a few years.
Also Bro. Frank I wasn't asking you to answer the questions to me. I was getting you to think and answer them to Yahvah.
Bro. Doc
Happy Thanksgiving, Pastor. I have read the Bible at least once a year since 1965--and the N.T. much more. Then there are my favorite books of the Bible.
I do not study it. I read it. I have been faulted for that, but I have seen the side affects of those who emphasize doctrine--even though most of it is correct.
I look for the broad guidelines for living in the Bible--I look for the obvious surface issues.
I am not a pastor, student of Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic. I would lose in any debate simply because someone who specializes in Reformed, Baptist, Catholic, Pentecostal, ect are armed with scripture to prove that they are right. More than one church says that they are right, even thought though act humble by saying they are not.
Second, educated and devoted Christians can be wrong. Reformers say God picked out a select group of people to be saved. Baptist disagree. Both are wrong and right at the same time. The same God who said 'Chosen' also said 'Whosoever.' It is a paradox. How can we be chosen, but God also says 'Whosoever will may come.' Both true. Western minds cannot accept that. It is not logical.
Third, I know I was born again. I just know it and I know when.
Fourth, I moved 20 times in 40 years and always went to church--and visited Charismatic, Pentecostal, Lutheran, all kinds of Baptists, etc. It is pointless for any of them to make their claims to me. I was in their churches and observed. The claims of healing are healing--healing is seldom. Tricky preachers blame the sick for lacking faith, and if healed, take the credit. People want church to be like it was at the beginning. It is. We are like the Corinthians, Colossians, Phiippians, and those in Acts. In Acts 5 Peter had a 'Killing' service. Two hypocrites died in church. Do you know of any church today that offers a 'Killing' Service? NO! They offer feel good meetings. Acts 6 there was a complaining about food distribution. Chapter 7 Steven was killed.
We are like the early church. Sardis had a reputation of being alive, but Jesus said it was dead. I have been in lively dead churches.
So to NOT answer your question, I feel good and scriptural in how we handling the December activities. I will not let you and my other Conservative Christian friends tell me the criteria I must use to make such decisions, not will I say how I do it.
Jesus will give me a report card one day on how I did. I may not enjoy much of it, but hopefully, I did a few things right.
I sure hope more people read your excellent post on Christmas. Christmas as celebrated in the USA is pathetic. We really do not know when Jesus was born. I know you think you have a very good idea. I think you are closer to the truth. Most of the churches I attended said that they thought the firth of Jesus was in October---not December. This is not a new idea.
Hope your day is going well. My single daughter is here. We had a nice lunch. We shared some turkey with our dog, and he wants me to take him for a walk now.
Blessings,
frank
@ANVRSADDAY - Thank you for the wonderful reply Bro. Frank.
I would like to ask a could of questions, and this is not to start anything.
Now, since we find nowhere in Scripture that tells us to celebrate a B-day then why would we celebrate His (Messiah's) B-day?
Next re-read Jer 10:1-5 in KJV.
Then the question is are we suppose to do this?
Next look at the time of year it was when Mary was P.G. Now, ask yourself would they be traveling in the winter, and would they be out in the weather a man and a P.G. Lady?
There would be no sheep or Shepherds out in the winter because in those days they had snow.
So what were they doing.
First of all they going to pay taxes which was the Fall.
Next what kind of Holiday fall is in the fall for the people of that day?
FEAST OF TABERNACLES & GREAT LAST DAYS
When does this happen?
Late Sept or early Oct.
Remember that the Jewish Calendar was 29 & 30 Days.
We can know the time frame that the Messiah was born in by this.
We can know when by the time that John the Baptist Father was doing his duties in the Temple, and we know that when Mary came to see Elizabeth that Elizabeth was at least 5 months along with John.
We know that John was born in the Spring about Passover time.
So we count 9 months from the time of Elizabeth being 5 months along, because this is when the Messiah was implanted in Mary in Dec, and we come to late Sept or early Oct for His actual date of Birth.
And He was born the first day of the Feast of Tabernacles, in that year it would have been Oct 5th, on the 8th day or Last Great Day he had the foreskin removed.
So we can read from a RCC (Roman Catholic Calendar) that the 8th or 9th is the Immaculate Conception of the Messiah.
9 months later is NOT Dec 25th.
So why it it the 25th of Dec that it is when one celebrates His Birth. Because the RCC made it that day, and most follow tradition.
If one my dear friend Bro. Frank was to celebrate B-days, His would have been clearly marked in Scripture.
Since it is not listed for any B-day celebration for anyone according to Scripture, (this is why His was not mentioned) we shouldn't keep His or ours either.
It is more important to keep His DEATH, BURIAL AND RESURRECTION from Wednesday to Sabbath, as the Scripture has it then a birth.
So you can mull this over and you don't really have to answer this. Do we follow tradition of man for the B-Day that they say is His Birth. Or do we recognize He was born on the First Day of Tabernacles and not celebrate it like Scripture has it, or follow the traditions of man?
We can make the choice?
My final question is what choice will you make according to Scripture?
And you don't have to answer me in print if you don't like.
This is truth for thought.
Have a blessed rest of the T-Day. Bro. Doc
Still on my Tablet.
We made sure our kids understood that 'Christmas' was about the birth of Jesus. The churches we attended emphasized Christ and acknowledge the commercialization of this holiday.
Theologians use the Bible to support their views of the current applicabiliy of scripture to today preceding the Gospel of Matthew. I will not participate in those debates.
We remain debt free, but too much spending and credit card use takes place.
My wife was escorted away from the Santa area in a Grand Rapids mall because she kept calling Santa 'Old Satan Nick.' She hates that about Chtistmas.
Have a nice day and Happy Thanksgiving.
Frank
Hi Pastor,
I cannot respond well using my tablet--too slow. Just a couple of thoughts w/o getting into the scriptual philosophy for living the Christian life.
Once saved, we told our children there was no Santa, but we would leave them gifts in the morning ourselves.
I think most church goers know Jesus was probably not born on Dec. 25. I do not think anyone knows for sure.
It is clearly a commercial event.
FRANK
