  • @AOK4WAY - You see Bro. Tony, the way this is written none of us is wrong. Because all this fits into the whole of what he said. Bro. Doc

  • @BroDoc - @ellie1945 - Oh well, as long as the two of you get it I guess. They say a wise man learns from his mistakes but a wiser man learns from someone else's, so I guess I can stretch it to see where you're coming from. Still, in what the man said as quoted here I see no wisdom at all, but rather a defeated life and a meaningless death.

  • @AOK4WAY - He did though...He learned what his life was all about...To him, it was a joke, a life that really wasn't worth living to him.....And yet, he lived out his life that way.....Nothing, to him anyway, was important, was worth caring for....And that is sad.....

  • I will answer both of you here.
To some people they learn something from life and find wisdom from it.
And to others they consider life a big joke and a waste of time living because they feel they don't learn much. So this person could be saying both in this sentence. Thank you Sis Ellie, and Bro. Tony. Bro. Doc

  • @ellie1945 - But sister, if the man died "knowing" that life is a "jest", which means a joke, what exactly is he supposed to have learned?

This quote is from a work entitled "My Own Epitaph". An epitaph is something you read on someone's tombstone, so he is declaring that having lived life and now preparing to die, all he learned is that is was all a joke. That's sad, and certainly there is no wisdom in it!

Life certainly is a learning experience, but this person obviously didn't learn anything worth knowing at all. His life and death were nothing but an empty joke to him.

  • @AOK4WAY -

Maybe he did, but....He learned from the experience....Life, regardless of how it is lived, is lived by learning....A learning experience.....

  • @ellie1945 - Sounds to me like he didn't learn a thing! He lived thinking life was a big joke and died "knowing" it. May I never so judge my life to have been a big joke when my appointed time to die arrives!

  • Wisdom is true here....He is saying that life is a learning experience.....
